The Book Thief Kitap Hırsızı İngilizce Kitap Özeti

The Book Thief Kitap Hırsızı İngilizce Kitap Özeti

by Markus Zusak
The year is 1939. The world is wrestling with the idea of another war, and the German people are teetering on the edge of a dreadful new reality. With the help of lively characters, poetic prose and an unusual narration by Death, The Book Thief takes us on a remarkable journey alongside the residents of one small street of one small town in war-torn Germany.
Liesel Meminger is a little girl lost when she arrives at a strange house on Himmel Street, feeling confused and alienated by a war she doesn’t understand. Her new foster parents, Hans and Rosa Hubermann, soon make her feel at home, although Hans’ gentle character is in stark contrast to his wife’s brusque embrace of motherhood.
Liesel befriends a boy who lives along the street, Rudy Steiner, and the two become inseparable. Important events such as Hitler’s birthday, book burning ceremonies and the horrors and destruction of the war unfolding in Europe’s fields and skies, are wound around day-to-day life for Liesel, Rudy and the other residents of Himmel Street.

Liesel struggles at first to read and write, but with Hans’ soft coaxing and dedicated coaching she is captivated by the world of words. Slowly but surely, Liesel begins to link the incredible power of words to the way Hitler is controlling and slowly destroying her homeland. Books become Liesel’s lifeline, and she finds solace in words when she befriends the Mayor’s wife, who lets her read in their well-stocked library. Each of the books that come into Liesel’s life has a special significance; she treasures links to her past and the comforting daily reading lessons with Hans.
As Liesel tries to come to terms with the significance of Hitler’s rule, the Hubermanns’ daily cycle of survival is jeopardised when a Jewish refugee, Max, begs a hiding place in their basement. The family struggle to keep their dangerous secret safe, and to keep Max alive in the achingly cold cellar. Liesel’s friendship with Max slowly grows, and through their shared love of words he becomes a brother figure to her. She’s devastated when Max has to leave; it’s no longer safe for him to stay. Soon afterwards he is captured and marched along Himmel Street to the nearby concentration camp, to Liesel’s despair.
As the war rips the country apart, and Allied bombs fall perilously close to Himmel Street, Liesel realises that words alone will never be enough to save the people she loves. But perhaps they can shine a brighter light on the beauty of human tenderness and compassion that still resist the hatred inflicted by Hitler and war.
The Book Thief is about growing up in Nazi Germany. But it’s also about hope, love, family, rebelliousness, guilt, the human spirit and the beauty that tragedy can bring

Monte Cristo İngilizce Kitap Özeti

Monte Cristo İngilizce Kitap Özeti

The Count of Monte Cristo centers around Edmond Dantes , who is imprisoned in a dungeon for fourteen years. Three men conspire against him. Danglars, jealous of Dantes being made ship captain, writes a letter which results in his arrest. Fernand, who is in love with Edmond’s fiancé Mercedes, conspires with Danglars to have Dantes accused of being a traitor. The royal prosecutor, Villefort, keeps the innocent Dantes detained in prison without trial for fear the truth will come out about his own father’s involvement with the Bonapartists.
During his time in prison, Edmond dwells upon thoughts of revenge. From another prisoner, he learns of a fortune hidden on the deserted island of Monte Cristo. Dantes manages to escape and discovers the treasure. He returns to society as a wealthy man, the Count of Monte Cristo.
Edmond uses his unexpected freedom and newfound wealth as an opportunity to get revenge on his enemies, and plots to bring about their ruin. By crafty planning and the assuming of disguises, he insinuates himself into their now-prosperous lives. An evil presence masquerading as a friend, he brings up old secrets and creates havoc and financial ruin upon his betrayers.
The Count of Monte Cristo: Theme of Revenge
The Count of Monte Cristo poses the age-old question—is vengeance ever justified? While Monte Cristo sets out to destroy his enemies, he finds that their lives are intermingled with people he cares about and who he means no harm. Every act of vengeance causes a chain reaction that punishes not only the guilty but the innocent.
By revenging himself upon Fernand, which results in his suicide, he brings disgrace to Fernand’s son, Albert, who he has grown to like. He also brings misery to Mercedes, the woman he still loves.
Dantes uses the weakness and greed of Villefort’s wife to cause the destruction of the Villefort family. Using poison she learned about from Dantes, she becomes a murderess and Villefort is driven to madness. Villefort’s innocent daughter from his first marriage, Valentine, who is in love with the son of Dante’s good friend, barely escapes being fatally poisoned as a result of Dante’s desire for vengeance.
After financially ruining Danglars, Dantes shows mercy by sparing his life. In the end, the Count learns that vengeance comes with a heavy price, and, freed at last from of his desire for revenge, he begins a new life.
Works Inspired by the Count of Monte Cristo
The Count of Monte Cristo has been made several times into movies, including the black and white 1934 version starring Robert Donat to a 2002 film starring James Caviezel in the role of Edmond Dantes.

Üç Silahşörler Kitabının Kısa İngilizce Özeti

The Three Musketeers - Author: Alexandre Dumas Setting: hikâyenin geçtiği yer

The Three Musketeers is set in 17th century France during the reign of Louis XIII. The story takes place predominantly in Paris, but the protagonist’s adventures take him across the French countryside and as far as England. Though the novel is based on historical information, and many of the events, such as the siege of New Rochelle, really occurred, Dumas has taken artistic liberties with many of the characters. It should not be looked at as a factual account of this period. Instead the novel should be recognized as a fine example of the genre of Romance.
Plot: Konusu
The novel follows D’Artagnan and his friends through several court intrigues and amorous encounters. These accounts are entertaining adventures that not only advance plot, but, perhaps more importantly, describe the fundamentals of court society as well as revealing character. As the story develops, its focus narrows to center on the struggle between Milady and D’Artagnan; the heart of the story is the war waged between good and evil. D’Artagnan and his friends, even considering their immoral actions, are cast as protectors of King and Queen while Milady and the Cardinal represent consummate evil.

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea

DENİZLER ALTINDA YİRMİ BİN FERSAH İNGİLİZCE KİTAP ÖZETİ

An eccentric French scientist, his friend and a jovial Canadian sailor are accidentally taken captive by Captain Nemo, a mad scientist in his amazing surmarine, the Nautilus. Placed under arrest by Nemo, the three companions learn to enjoy their new home, and with Nemo they explore the seven seas, travelling to barbarian lands, the lost city of Atlantis, and even fight an enormous squid-like monster. ” Daniel, Resident Scholar “Mysterious things are happening in the sea. Ships are being sent out; however, they are sunk by someone… or maybe something… Monsieur Arronax, a scientist is invited, along with his trusty servant Conseil, on a ship known as the Abraham Lincoln, to seek out the cause of the recent ship wrecks. After a few months out into open water, they are attacked, by something that looks like a monster. After a long chase in the water, an event throws the worthy scientist off the ship, along with Conseil, and a Canadian fisherman, Ned Land. Eventually they get close to the so called monster, which eventually turns out to be a modern, as well as highly technological submarine, titled the Nautilus. Captain Nemo, commander of the Sub, allows the trio to stay on the ship, however, they are not permitted to leave. Now begins an extraordinary voyage under the sea, as Arronax, who is guided by Captain Nemo discovers the fascinating wonders of the sea. Arronax, as well as Conseil, is fascinated by what he sees around himself. But the Canadian fisherman is losing his patience by the day. Despite the amazing specimens, scientific facts, not to be found in nearly a hundred years by man, fantastic locales and the captain’s generosity, Ned still wants to escape. Arronax decides that if a worthy opportunity presents itself, then they will not hesitate to leave. Although he has given his word, Arronax does not wish to anger the captain, for his generosity is much too great for that matter. The submarine starts in regular waters, continues in a boiling soup, travels through Atlantis, volcanoes, giant sea monsters, and there is more where that came from. All of this is packed tight into a 300 page sci-fi thriller! ” Walid Khalid, Resident Scholar “The story basically begins with the very intelligent Professor Arronax calculating basic measurements. He’s a modern french biologist during this time period. The professor had somewhat of an understudy, an apprentice if you will, named Conseil. Conseil was just about as skilled as the professor as far as classification, and knowing so much information about just about everything. One day, the professor got a letter that invited him to go on a select trip to hunt the killer narwhal. Mysteriously, several ships had been rammed, and had a triangular shaped scar on the spot where the uncanny shipmates had decided that the narwhal hit. So Professor Arronax and Conseil went to examine the accidents. They get on the ship and meet a Canadian harpooner named Ned Land. He told them that he was the best at what he does, and that he was ready to take out the narwhal. After a while, they come across the infamous narwhal. They find it strange that the narwhal is about three times as long as the ship they’re on, and that it glows. The professor’s ship is attacked, and they are stranded in the ocean, they climb aboard the narwahal to find out that it is in actuality a submarine. They finally meet a strange man named Captain Nemo, who explains to them that it is his ship and that the professor, Conseil, and Ned Land can stay as long as they go with him on a trip around the world in his submarine, the Nautilus. They begin to go on amazing trips.” Emmanuel Hayes, Resident Scholar

Çarlinin Çharlie Çikolata Fabrikası İngilizce Kitap Özeti

Çarlinin Çikolata Fabrikası İngilizce Kitap Özeti

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Mr. Willy Wonka, the eccentric owner of the greatest chocolate factory in the world, has decided to open the doors of his factory to five lucky children and their parents. In order to choose who will enter the factory, Mr. Wonka devises a plan to hide five golden tickets beneath the wrappers of his famous chocolate bars. The search for the five golden tickets is fast and furious. Augustus Gloop, a corpulent child whose only hobby is eating, unwraps the first ticket, for which his town throws him a parade. Veruca Salt, an insufferable brat, receives the next ticket from her father, who had employed his entire factory of peanut shellers to unwrap chocolate bars until they found a ticket. Violet Beauregarde discovers the third ticket while taking a break from setting a world record in gum chewing. The fourth ticket goes to Mike Teavee, who, as his name implies, cares only about television.
Charlie Bucket, the unsuspecting hero of the book, defies all odds in claiming the fifth and final ticket. A poor but virtuous boy, Charlie lives in a tiny house with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bucket, and all four of his grandparents. His grandparents share the only bed in the house, located in the only bedroom, and Charlie and his parents sleep on mattresses on the floor. Charlie gets three sparse meals a day, which is hardly enough to nourish a growing boy, As a result, he is almost sickly thin. Once a year, on his birthday, Charlie gets one bar of Wonka chocolate, which he savors over many months. The Bucket family’s circumstances become all the more dire when Mr. Bucket loses his job. But a tremendous stroke of luck befalls Charlie when he spots a raggedy dollar bill buried in the snow. He decides to use a little of the money to buy himself some chocolate before turning the rest over to his mother. After inhaling the first bar of chocolate, Charlie decides to buy just one more and within the wrapping finds the fifth golden ticket. He is not a moment too soon: the next day is the date Mr. Wonka has set for his guests to enter the factory.
Neither Mr. nor Mrs. Bucket can accompany Charlie to the factory. Mr. Bucket must search for work to put food on the table and Mrs. Bucket must care for the invalided grandparents. Magically, Charlie’s oldest and most beloved grandparent, Grandpa Joe, springs out of bed for the first time in decades. Charlie’s lucky find has transformed him into an energetic and almost childlike being. Grandpa Joe and Charlie set out on their adventure.
In the factory, Charlie and Grandpa Joe marvel at the unbelievable sights, sounds, and especially smells of the factory. Whereas they are grateful toward and respectful of Mr. Wonka and his factory, the other four children succumb to their own character flaws. Accordingly, they are ejected from the factory in mysterious and painful fashions. Augustus Gloop falls into the hot chocolate river—while attempting to drink it—and is sucked up by one of the many pipes. Veruca Salt is determined to be a “bad nut” by nut-judging squirrels who throw her out with the trash. Violet Beauregarde impetuously grabs an experimental piece of gum and chews herself into a giant blueberry. She is consequently removed from the factory. With the hope of being on his beloved television, Mike Teavee shrinks himself, and his father has to carry him out in his breast pocket. During each child’s fiasco, Mr. Wonka alienates the parents with his nonchalant reaction to the child’s seeming demise. He remains steadfast in his belief that everything will work out in the end.
After each child’s trial, the Oompa-Loompas beat drums and sing a moralizing song about the downfalls of greedy, spoiled children. When only Charlie remains, Willy Wonka turns to him and congratulates him for winning. The entire day has been another contest, the prize for which is the entire chocolate factory, which Charlie has just won. Charlie, Grandpa Joe, and Mr. Wonka enter the great glass elevator, which explodes through the roof of the factory and crashes down through the roof of Charlie’s house, where they collect the rest of the Bucket family.

After an English soldier tries to rape Murron and Wallace escapes, the village sheriff publicly executes Murron by slitting her throat, proclaiming "an assault on the King's soldiers is the same as an assault on the King himself." In retribution, Wallace and several villagers slaughter the English Garrison, and Wallace executes the sheriff in the same manner that he executed Murron: slicing his throat. Now Wallace has no choice but to fight against the English, who have taken his wife and country.

Immediately following a ceremony in Edinburgh where Wallace is knighted Sir William Wallace and appointed "the guardian and high protector of Scotland", the other nobles begin bickering amongst themselves. Spartacus Film Özeti İngilizce

Spartacus film özeti ingilizce

SUMMARY:
At the gladiator school in Capua, Spartacus begins training under the brutal Marcellus (Charles McGraw). We get a training montage. Spartacus makes a love connection with a servant named Lavinia (Jean Simmons). Crassus (Laurence Olivier), the richest man in Rome, arrives with two “ladies” who insist on watching pairs fight to the death.Spartacus loses to “the big black one” Draba (Woody Strode) who inexplicably tries to kill Crassus and is himself dispatched by a “brilliant dagger stroke”. The resulting bad blood leads to a rebellion in the kitchen with Marcellus finding out the soup is not always good food.

Spartacus halts the pairing of Roman nobles, swearing he will never witness a gladiator match again. He convinces the rebels to form an army and battle their way out of Italy. Slaves join up from the countryside and the “army” encamps on the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius. When six cohorts of the Roman garrison approach under the command of Crassus' boy Glabrus (John Dall), Spartacus ambushes his unsecure camp (off screen unfortunately).
Back in Rome, Crassus has dreams of bringing law and order to the untidy democracy of the late Republic. A dictatorship would be more efficient and guess who he thinks the dictator should be. Representing that democracy is the portly Senator Gracchus (Charles Laughton) whose hedonistic lifestyle represents the immorality of democracy. He is determined to thwart the power-hungry Crassus.

The slaves are on the move and defeat several Roman armies off screen. Spartacus and Varinia smooch enough to get Varinia pregnant. A pretty slave youth named Antoninus (Tony Curtis) who does magic and sings songs joins them. He had escaped Crassus' villa after deciding that he does not like snails and oysters.

The rebels make contact with Cilician pirates and make a deal to get passage out of Italy. In Rome, Crassus wins the power struggle with Gracchus and gets himself appointed dictator to deal with the slave menace and restore patrician authority. He pays off the pirates to abandon the rebels at the port of Brindusium. When Spartacus learns of the betrayal, he determines the only strategy is to march on Rome and confront the lion in its den. He gives a heartfelt speech to his mob emphasizing the value of freedom. The scene jumps back and forth to a speech given by the pompous Crassus to his robotic legions. He lauds the old Roman virtues of discipline and patricianness and promises the head of Spartacus.
The climactic battle is epic. Kubrick used 8,000 Spanish soldiers for the legionaries. They ominously approach the mass of rebel warriors (men and women) in their famous checkerboard formation. The rebels are supposed to be intimidated, but they have a trick up their tunics. Fire rollers! (Future epic movie makers take note. Fire is cool.) The velites panic and then Spartacus leads a mass assault that threatens to swamp the legion. While Crassus leads from the rear, Spartacus is in the thick of the fighting and even severs a soldier's arm in the only graphic moment in the scene. Things take a turn for the worse when two other Roman legions arrive to doom the rebels. Cut to a field strewn with corpses.

Varinia is taken by Crassus and shipped to his villa. He is determined to identify Spartacus and feature him in his triumph. An offer of leniency to the slave who fingers Spartacus results in the iconic “I am Spartacus!” scene. They refuse to name names (“get it?”, says the blacklisted Trumbo) so the survivors will be crucified along the Appian Way.Gracchus (his name is at the head of a list of the “disloyal”) also refuses to kowtow and kiss Crassus' ring (“get it?”, says Trumbo). Before he has a rendezvous with a dagger and a bathtub, he gets Batiatus to rescue Varinia and her baby.

Harry Potter Sırlar Odası İngilizce Kitap Özeti

Harry Potter Sırlar Odası İngilizce Kitap Özeti

Writer: Joanne K. Rowling
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Harry Potter is spending his summer holidays with the Dursleys when he meets Dobby, a house-elf, who warns him not to go to Hogwarts. When the young wizard refuses, the house-elf drops a large pudding in the Dursleys’ kitchen and Harry is punished for it. The Dursleys lock him in his room, but soon afterwards he is freed by Ron and his twin brothers and is taken to The Burrow in an enchanted flying car.
It is time to return to school. Harry and Ron try to get through the portal at King’s Cross Station, but find it closed. So they steal Mr Weasley’s car and fly it to Hogwarts, only to crash into the Whomping Willow. They escape being expelled but are given detention. School days pass quickly. Inside the castle Harry is the only person who hears a mysterious voice threatening to kill. After a Halloween party, Mrs Norris the cat is found Petrified. The students are scared; everyone is talking about the Chamber of Secrets and the monster within.
During a Quidditch match, Gryffindor against Slytherin, Harry is injured by a rogue Bludger. He ends up in hospital where he is visited by Dobby again. The house-elf admits that he closed the portal at the station and bewitched the bludger. A student ends up Petrified and Harry learns that the Chamber of Secrets was opened fifty years before.
Professor Lockheart starts a Duelling Club. When Draco Malfoy sets a serpent against Harry, the wizard stops its attack by speaking in parseltongue. The students are terrified and suspect Harry of being the heir of Slytherin. The rumour intensifies when the young wizard finds another student and one of the ghosts Petrified. Hermione brews a Polyjuice Potion so they can transform into Malfoy’s friends and get their enemy to admit that he is the real heir. But the boys discover that Draco does not know who is opening the Chamber. Ron and Harry find an empty diary. Harry is curious and starts writing in it. The diary was enchanted by a boy called Tom Riddle; through it Harry sees Hagrid, fifty years earlier, accused of setting a giant spider onto a girl and killing her.

When Hermione and another girl are Petrified, Ron and Harry use an invisible cloak to get to Hagrid’s hut. Hidden behind the cloak they hear the Minister of Magic arresting Hagrid and removing Dumbledore as headmaster. Hagrid instructs them to follow the spiders. These lead the boys into the Forbidden Forest. Here Ron and Harry are captured by a colony of giant spiders. The leader, Aragog, admits that he is Hagrid’s monster. The boys find out that the monster’s victim could be Moaning Myrtle, now a wraith in the toilets.
During a visit to Hermione, Ron and Harry find a piece of paper in her hand bearing the word ‘basilisk’. Their friend had discovered the identity of the real monster. The teachers panic when Ginny Weasley is abducted, and they send the students home.
Ron and Harry decide it is time to act, so they take Professor Lockheart to Moaning Myrtle’s toilet and there they find a secret passage through one of the sinks. The boys and their hapless teacher go down the passageway. Lockheart tries to bewitch them but the curse falls on himself. Ron and Harry are separated, and Harry decides to enter the chamber alone.
The young wizard finds Ginny Weasley alive, but he also meets Tom Riddle. The latter admits that he is Lord Voldermort, the last heir of Slytherin, and he sets the basilisk onto Harry. Dumbledore’s phoenix enters the chamber and drops the Sorting Hat in Harry’s hands, whilst it punctures the basilisk’s eyes. In the Sorting Hat, Harry finds Gryffindor’s sword and with it kills the snake. The wizard destroys Tom Riddle by pushing the basilisk’s poisonous fang into the diary.
Back in Dumbledore’s office, Harry tells his story. Lucius Malfoy, furious that the headmaster is back, is accused of giving Ginny the bewitched diary. He is also tricked by Potter into freeing Dobby. The students celebrate with a midnight feast and Gryffindor win the House Cup for the second time running.

Yüzüklerin Efendisi İngilizce Film Özeti

İngilizce film özeti Yüzüklerin Efendisi

Lord Of The Rings
Length: 787 words (2.2 double-spaced pages)
In The Hobbit the danger and the excitement reach a peak
when the forces of good seem about to be overcome by the
forces of evil. In The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien builds to
two simultaneous peaks. One occurs at the point when
Sauron’s forces sweep down on the small army led by
Aragorn at the gates of Mordor. The other occurs inside
Mordor, as Frodo struggles with Gollum on the edge of the
Crack of Doom, where the Ring is to be destroyed. Both
the war and the quest reach their resolution in the same
instant, when the Ring is destroyed and with it, Sauron’s
power.
The fourth and final part of each story serves to wind things
down. The hero returns home, looking forward to comfort.
He finds instead that his home is threatened. But he has
grown through his experiences and is able to regain what is
his. Of course, there are many important differences between
the two works. The Hobbit follows the story through
Bilbo’s eyes and tells of events in a chronological sequence.
In other words, you hear about things as they happen, rather
than jumping ahead to future events, or flashing back to
something that happened in the past. When Tolkien departs
from this chronological sequence in The Hobbit, he
carefully guides you through the jump in time: “Now if you
wish, like the dwarves, to hear news of Smaug, you must
go back again to the evening when he smashed the door
and flew off in a rage, two days before.”
The story line of The Lord of the Rings, on the other hand,
is much more complicated. The Lord of the Rings is a
trilogy, consisting of three volumes (Parts One to Three)
divided into six sections (Books I through VI). The novel
jumps back and forth in time, following the stories of
several characters. The various story lines finally converge
near the end when all the characters are reunited as Aragorn
is crowned king of Gondor. Tolkien uses these shifts in
viewpoint to good effect, often ending his scenes as cliff-
hangers, slowly building the tension to its climax. But
trying to follow the different story lines as he jumps back
and forth from one to the other can be very difficult.
Tolkien doesn’t guide you through them as he did in The
Hobbit. But he does give clues to help you put the pieces in
order. For example, when Tolkien returns to Sam and
Frodo in Book VI, he shows you that he’s jumping back in
time by telling you what Merry, Pippin, and Aragorn are
doing at the same moment.
Many people have commented that The Hobbit is like a
simple fairy tale, whereas The Lord of the Rings is more
like a great epic poem of the past, such as The Odyssey of
Homer or Beowulf, the famous Old English tale of
heroism. Like both fairy tales and epics, Tolkien’s books
are stories of heroism in an imaginary world filled with
fantastic people and creatures. But The Hobbit, like many
fairy tales, is first and foremost the story of an individual’s
growth into maturity. It has a fairy-tale ending, with Bilbo
smoking happily on his pipe many years later, rich from his
adventures and satisfied with his life. An epic, on the other
hand, tries to relate the hero’s story to a long history and is
more concerned with questions of moral choices and the
fate of all men, than with its individual hero. In fact, many
epics, such as Beowulf, end with the death of their heroes.
The Lord of the Rings shares these characteristics of epics.
Unlike Bilbo, Frodo doesn’t live happily ever after. He’s
been wounded physically and also psychically by the loss
of the Ring. His passage to the Blessed Realm at the end of
the book may be interpreted as a symbolic death.
Part of Tolkien’s genius lies in the way he combined the
forms of fairy tale and epic. The heroes of most epics are
larger than life, possessing great strength and ability, like
the superheroes of comic books. But people nowadays find
it hard to identify with such impossible heroes. Frodo, an
ordinary person who has been thrust into a situation beyond
his abilities, is a more suitable hero for a modern audience.

STAR TREK BİLİNMEZE DOĞRU İNGİLİZCE FİLM ÖZETİ

Star Trek Into Darkness Movie Poster

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS (2013)

Cast
  • Chris Pine as James T. Kirk
  • Benedict Cumberbatch as John Harrison
  • Zachary Quinto as Spock
  • Simon Pegg as Scotty
  • Zoe Saldana as Nyota Uhura
Director
  • J.J. Abrams
Producer
  • J.J. Abrams
Less a classic “Star Trek” adventure than a “Star Trek”-flavored action flick, shot in the frenzied, handheld, cut-cut-cut style that’s become Hollywood’s norm, director J.J. Abrams’ latest could have been titled “The Bourne Federation.”
The plot pits the Enterprise crew against an intergalactic terrorist named John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch, giving his honeyed baritone a workout), who’s waging war on the Federation for mysterious personal reasons. There’s a joke, an argument, a chase, a spaceship battle, or a brutal close-quarters firefight every five minutes, but all the action is intimately tied to character. The major players, particularly Chris Pine’s James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto’s Mr. Spock, are as finely shaded as the incarnations played by William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. This new voyage of the starship Enterprise is brash, confident, and often brutally violent, and features the most lived-in production design I’ve seen in a Hollywood sci-fi blockbuster since “Minority Report.”
Why, then, is the film ultimately disappointing? I suspect it’s the pop culture echo chamber effect: Abrams and his screenwriters (Robert Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof) are so obsessed with acknowledging and then futzing around with what we already know about Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Uhura, Scotty and company that the movie doesn’t breathe. “Star Trek Into Darkness” is peppered with nods to past films and episodes: Kirk’s impetuous decision-making and horndog sexual proclivities; Spock’s denial of his half-humanness; Dr. McCoy’s cranky witticisms; Scotty’s protestations of what he and the ship “canna” do; references to tribbles and neutral zones and the Harry Mudd incident. The central plotline refers to one of Trek’s most celebrated storylines — a callback that alternately seems to honor the original, then turn it on its head, then honor it again. The final act includes an homage to one of the most famous scenes in the entire Trek canon — but this, too, is an inversion, or appears to be, until the script springs another whiplash reversal.
I’d like to be more specific in my complaints, and feel as though I have a right to be. After all, the “surprises” Abrams would prefer I keep secret aren’t surprises if you’re passingly familiar with the Trek universe. (All you really need to know is that the film is plotted like a Bourne film or a season of 24, and that Harrison is not as he seems, or as he represents himself; his layers have layers.) But I’ll save a detailed gripe list for a blog post this weekend, and say here that “Star Trek Into Darkness” is one of the most aggressively self-conscious summer blockbusters ever made.
The story starts with a “Raiders of the Lost Ark”-like action sequence: Kirk, Spock and the gang are embroiled in a secret mission on a red jungle planet filled with superstitious tribespeople whose lives are threatened by a volcanic eruption. The correct thing to do is leave Mr. Spock behind, because going back to rescue him would violate the Federation’s Prime Directive against messing with the natural development of primitive cultures. It’s in this opening sequence, for better or worse, that the movie establishes a vexing narrative pattern: The characters have urgently necessary arguments about the morally, ethically, and procedurally correct thing to do in a crisis, then one character (usually Kirk) makes a unilateral, straight-from-the-gut decision that worsens everything; and yet somehow at the end he’s rewarded, or at least not seriously punished.
We’re given to understand that it’s always a good thing to prize personal friendship and loyalty above the concerns of one’s crew, ship, federation or species. Sometimes the reward is quite deliberate — as in the end scene, which finds Kirk being celebrated as a hero after making what looked to me like a series of catastrophic rookie mistakes that ended dozens of lives. Other times it’s as if the cosmos itself is rewarding or at least protecting Kirk, as when he loses command of the Enterprise for his behavior on the primitive planet, then gets it back thanks to another sudden plot twist. A good alternate title for this movie would be the name of one of Steven Soderbergh’s great books about filmmaking: “Getting Away With It: Or, the Further Adventures of the Luckiest Bastard You Ever Saw.” The Federation itself seems to have plenty in common with Kirk: Both the opening mission and a subsequent intergalactic act of aggression are presented as having grave consequences if they fail, then the film just sort of writes them off with a shrug, as if to say, “Well, that’s all in the past, and as long as it doesn’t happen again, no harm, no foul.” (Has anyone in the Federation actually honored the Prime Directive?)
Yes, the film’s stumblebum plotting comes from a desire to give audience what it wants: Kirk in command, flying by the seat of his tight pants; Spock learning that it’s OK to acknowledge his emotions and then act on them, and that there’s more to life than following rules all the time; etc. But surely there were more elegant ways to get us there! Abrams makes the 23rd century look like a place of actions and consequences, in which humans and other creatures might actually live, think and feel, in a world in which a fall of more than ten feet could break a leg, lava can melt flesh, and people who are dead stay dead. But he also tells stories in which rules — Starfleet tactical procedures, the Prime Directive, gravity — have no narrative weight. Too much of “Star Trek Into Darkness” has what I call a “playground storytelling” sensibility: “Lie down, you’re dead. Never mind, you’re alive again — now fight!” This narrative flailing-about isn’t merely amateurish, it’s at odds with the gritty production design and pseudo-documentary camerawork and references to 9/11 and the War on Terror. It takes a great artist to be both serious and silly, and Abrams, for all his enthusiasm, just ain’t it.
For all its sloppiness and blind spots and fanboy pirouettes, though, “Star Trek Into Darkness” is still an involving film with more heart than most summer blockbusters. Abrams’ roots in TV (FelicityAliasLost) seem to have made him attentive to the dynamics of groups, and to the repeated phrases and gestures that bond viewers to characters. Pine’s beefy frat-boy Kirk is appealing, especially when he’s being called on the carpet; Pine has several strong scenes opposite Cumberbatch’s Harrison and Bruce Greenwood’s mentor-father figure, Capt. Pike, in which Pine is overmatched as both character and actor but uses the imbalance to enhance the scene. Sometimes you see terror in Kirk’s eyes as he blusters; his vulnerability makes you root for him even though his “I gotta be me!” philosophy destroys careers and ends lives. Quinto’s Spock is equal to, but different than, Leonard Nimoy’s incarnation, and it’s a relief to see that Abrams has made the destruction of Vulcan in the first film a key component of the character’s psychology. As Spock explains to communications officer Uhura (Zoe Saldana), his main squeeze, it’s not that he can’t feel any emotion, it’s that he’s decided he’s better off not feeling it: this Spock is a Holocaust survivor who has adopted numbness as a survival strategy. Uhura, Simon Pegg’s Scotty, John Cho’s Sulu, Anton Yelchin’s Chekov, and Karl Urban’s “Bones” McCoy all have their moments, too; they behave like plausibly real people even when the script is asking them to do and say things that common sense tells us is horse manure, and their presences lend the film a dignity that its careless storytelling doesn’t earn.

Ölü Adamın Adası İngilizce Türkçe Kitap Özeti

Ölü Adamın Adası İngilizce Türkçe Kitap Özeti

Dead Man’s Island – Ölü Adamın Adası – Writer: John  Escott
Carol lives with her father and mother in Hong Kong. Her father is on  business trip by plane. The day that he comes back there’s a plane accident.  First she doesn’t think that her father can sit in that plane. But later as she  thinks it over, she calls her mother. They drive to the airplane and there they  hear that her father has died.
That was really hard for Carol and her mother. Carol doesn’t listen to  the music of her favourite singer Jake Rosso anymore. He was also killed in an  accident. Her mother concludes to go back to England, because Carol was expelled  from school.
So they go to England and live in a hotel for a long time. Her mother  finds a job as secretary and her workplace is on a little island somewhere in  Scotland. She can live there with Carol. As she arrives at the house, she meets  Mr. Ross. He is her boss. Mr. Ross is a young man with a moustache. While  Carol’s mother works, Carol helps on the farm on the island.
One day when she comes back from horse riding she looks up and she sees  an old man in a window. He looks away when she looks at him. The next day  Carol makes some pictures of the house. While she looks in her camera Mr. Ross  gets out. She wants to make a picture but then the gardener comes toward her and  takes the camera out of her hands and demolishes her photograph cotton reel. She  is shocked. When she asks why she can’t make a photo he said that you never must  make a photo of Mr. Ross. She finds it all completely mysterious.
That evening she begins researching and she goes to the room the window  belongs to. There’s light in the room. She waits and looks. Then the door is  opening. Mr. Ross comes out of the room. Carol hides in her room. She sees that  Mr. Ross puts the keys in the plant barge. The next day she goes up to the room,  picks up the keys and enters the room. She looks around and sees a lot of  posters of Jack Rosso in the room.
Then Mr. Ross is coming in the room. She is shocked and looks at the  posters. Then she sees it: Mr. Ross is Jack Rosso. She shouted: “You are Jack  Rosso!” Just as Mr. Ross says nothing. But then he says the he is Jack Rosso. He  says: “In the past I was on drugs and I was addicted to alcohol. I was drunk,  got in the car and then I ran over a 15 year old girl and killed her, but I  drove further. Later I realised what I had done and I wanted to die.
He says, I had a plan: I pretended there was an accident and I was  dead”
She finds it strange that she lives on a island with a dead man. Later  she leaves from the island. Now she is at school and she is very happy.
