Once upon a time, in a field not too far from you, there was an energetic and happy hare and a sleepy tortoise.

The happy hare was called Noel and the sleepy tortoise was called Archibald. Archibald the tortoise liked to sit and munch his dinner slowly, whilst Noel the hare would gobble up his dinner and run round and round Archibald until he was dizzy.

One day, they had an argument.

‘I am the fastest animal in the whole wide world,’ said Noel. ‘I’m faster than a cheeky cheetah, a kicking kangaroo and a racing rabbit,’ he boasted.

‘Oh do be quiet,’ sighed Archibald. ‘You are so full of yourself! If you’re not careful you’ll come to a sticky end.’

‘Where’s sticky end then?’ asked Noel. ‘Is it far from here?’

Archibald rolled his eyes and carried on munching on some tasty lettuce leaves.

‘Oh, you two do stop arguing,’ said a blackbird as he flew past.

‘No, this is serious,’ said Noel the hare. ‘I will prove to you all that I’m the fastest animal in the whole wide world!’

‘Ok,’ said Archibald the tortoise. ‘I’ll race you then!’

Noel the hare laughed his head off.

‘Just you wait and see,’ said Archibald. ‘I’ll get Wallace the wise old owl to organise a race for us.’

Wallace the wise old owl arranged the race for the next day. All the animals in the field put on their best clothes, groomed their fur, picked up a flag to wave and got ready to cheer the tortoise and the hare on.

‘On your marks! Get set! Go!’ called Wallace. And the race was off!

Slowly, slowly, Archibald the tortoise set off and quickly, quickly Noel the hare raced off and soon he was out of sight. In fact, he was so far ahead that, when he looked back, Archibald the tortoise was nowhere to be seen.

‘Gosh,’ Noel thought. ‘I’ve more or less won all ready! I think I’ll just have a little nap under this tree, it’s such a hot day.’ Noel the hare was soon fast asleep.

Meanwhile, Archibald the tortoise ambled along slowly, enjoying the sun on his shell. On and on and on and on and on he plodded and taking the odd nibble of grass from time to time. He plodded past the oak tree, he plodded past the bridge, he plodded past the cow shed, he even plodded past Noel the hare who was still snoring under the tree. Archibald plodded on until he came to the finishing line where Wallace the wise old owl and all the other animals in the field were gathered.

All the animals clustered around Archibald cheering and shouting.

‘Well done! Well done! You’re the winner!’

All the noise woke Noel the hare up with a start.

‘Oh my! Oh my! What’s going on? What’s all the noise? Never mind. I’d better finish the race then I can go and have my dinner,’ he thought.

Noel the hare raced off down the hill towards the finishing line. But when he got there, to his horror, he saw Archibald the tortoise with a gold winner’s medal around his neck.

‘This can’t be right! He must have cheated,’ cried Noel the hare. ‘Everyone knows I’m faster than him!’

‘Archibald the tortoise didn’t cheat,’ said Wallace the wise old owl. ‘He has won fair and square. Slowly and surely, never giving up, Archibald passed the finishing line first.’

Noel the hare looked very unhappy and sulky. Archibald the tortoise felt sorry for him and tried to cheer him up.

‘Cheer up Noel, it was only a race,’ Archibald said. ‘I’m sure you’ll win the next one. And I’d rather we were still friends than win every race under the sun.’

And from that day on, they became the best of friends and Noel the hare never boasted again.

Cinderella

A traditional French tale

Once upon a time there was a girl called Cinderella. She was called Cinderella because every morning and every night she had to clean the cinders from the fireplace.

Cinderella lived with her stepmother and two stepsisters. Her stepmother and stepsisters wore pretty dresses made of silk and velvet. Cinderella had no pretty dresses. She had to wear old rags.

Cinderella was a thoughtful and kind-hearted girl. Her two stepsisters were mean and nasty, but they believed themselves to be beautiful inside and out. Their mother believed this too, but to her Cinderella was ugly.

Cinderella's stepmother was not kind at all. She was always shouting at Cinderella, 'Do this! Do that! Faster! Faster! Work! Work! Work!'

Cinderella's stepsisters were very lazy. 'Wash the dishes! Sweep the floor!', they would shout at her.

And so every day Cinderella was in the kitchen working from morning until night. She wasn't completely alone, though. In the kitchen she had six little mouse friends. They lived in a hole under the floor. They sang squeaky little mouse songs to Cinderella when she was tired or sad.

One day an invitation arrived for Cinderella and her two stepsisters. They had been invited to a ball by the king and queen of the country! Their son, the prince, was looking for a wife. He was having trouble finding the right person, and so his parents had decided to invite all the girls in the country to the palace.

Cinderella and her stepsisters were delighted to be invited. Cinderella smiled and her sisters jumped up and down with joy. But Cinderella's stepmother could only frown.

'I hope you don't think you're going to the ball!' she said to Cinderella. 'It's no place for a girl like you. I need you here to clean the windows.'

On the evening of the ball, Cinderella felt sad and lonely when everyone left without her.

As Cinderella stood sighing in the kitchen, her six little mouse friends appeared. They sang their happiest song to try to cheer her up.

A tear rolled down Cinderella's cheek. The mice began to think that there was no possible way to cheer her up. But then suddenly...pouf! A lady appeared. She was all dressed in white and carrying a magic wand.

'Don't worry, Cinderella. I am your fairy godmother and you shall go to the ball!'



First of all she touched Cinderella with her magic wand. In the blink of an eye, Cinderella's rags had disappeared and instead she was wearing a beautiful gown made of silk. It was the colour of the sky on a sunny day.

Next the fairy godmother noticed a large pumpkin on the kitchen worktop. She took it outside and touched it with her magic wand. It grew and grew and grew until it became an elegant carriage.

'And now we need some horses!' said the fairy godmother. One by one, she touched each of the mice with her magic wand. Suddenly, there were six beautiful horses ready to pull the carriage to the palace.


'Now you can go to the ball! But be careful, because at midnight the magic spell will end. You will be back in your rags with a pumpkin and six mice. Please be home by then.'

Cinderella looked down at her bare feet.

'Oh! I forgot about your shoes. I'll need to use a different spell for them since I’m making them out of thin air. But you'll be able to keep them forever! There you are, a pair of glass slippers.'

Cinderella was delighted to be out of the house. She had never been in a horse-drawn carriage before. She was very happy to be sharing it with her mouse friends, even though they were now horses and so could not sing to her.

At the palace, the prince stepped outside for some fresh air. He saw Cinderella arriving and watched as she spoke quietly to her horses.

'Don’t worry,' she said. 'I'll be back before you know it! I won't let you turn back into mice so far away from home.'

'Adorable!' the prince thought. 'What a kind girl this must be, to care so much about her horses. I wonder if she'd agree to dance with me!'

Cinderella walked up the steps to the palace door and the prince walked in with her. They danced and talked all night.



Before she knew it, Cinderella heard the first chimes of midnight from the palace clock. She ran for the door, leaving the prince terribly sad.



The prince ran after her and stood on the palace steps trying in vain to see which way she had gone. He noticed something glistening in the moonlight. It was one of Cinderella's glass slippers!

The prince had a brainwave. He would use the glass slipper to find her.

The prince visited every house in the land to find the girl whose foot would fit in the glass slipper. He was starting to lose all hope when he arrived at Cinderella's house.

Cinderella's stepsisters tried and tried to get their feet into the slipper but it was no use. Their feet were just too big!

'Where is your other daughter?' the prince asked Cinderella's stepmother.

'Oh, you wouldn't be interested in her!' the stepsisters sneered.

Just then, Cinderella came out of the kitchen. The prince recognised her immediately, even though she was wearing rags and had bare feet. Of course, the glass slipper fit her perfectly.

Cinderella and the prince were delighted to be reunited. They decided to get married; lots of people came to the wedding and it was a wonderful day.

Cinderella's stepmother and stepsisters were invited but they chose not to go. Instead, they stayed at home and sulked.

And the prince and Cinderella lived happily ever after.

Keloğlan and the Magic Seal 

One day, Keloğlan was walking back from the marketplace after selling his crops to the people of the neighbouring village. He had earned three gold coins that day and was pleased with himself because now his mother would be able to buy food and clothing to last through the long winter. Suddenly, Keloğlan came across a group of men who were teasing a cat with a long stick. The cat looked very scared and was unable to escape.

Keloğlan walked up to the men and said in a kind voice: ‘Please stop teasing that poor cat. If you stop, I will give you a gold coin.’ The men agreed to put down the stick, and Keloğlan handed over a shiny gold coin. The cat was very grateful to the boy and walked by his side. He promised that if ever he was able to repay the boy’s kindness, he would jump at the chance. Keloğlan could not imagine how a cat might help him, but he agreed that the cat could join him. The two friends continued on their journey back to the boy’s home in the neighbouring village.

The boy and the cat walked for a few miles. Suddenly, they came across an old man and woman who were beating a dog because it had been barking too loudly. Keloğlan approached the couple and said in a kind voice: ‘Please stop beating that poor dog. If you stop, I will give you a gold coin.’ The old couple stopped beating the dog and took the gold coin from the boy. The dog was grateful to the boy for saving him, and he asked to join the boy on his journey. He promised that he would always be faithful and help whenever he could. Keloğlan could not imagine how a dog might help him, but he agreed that the dog could join them. The three friends continued on their journey home. Not long after this, Keloğlan and his new companions stumbled upon two woodcutters in the forest. They were trying to kill a snake with a sharp axe. Keloğlan walked up to the angry woodcutters and said in a kind voice:

‘Please do not kill that snake. If you leave the snake in peace, I will give you a gold coin.’

The woodcutters thought about Keloğlan’s proposition for a moment and then agreed to put down the axe. The boy handed over his last gold coin without thinking. He was happy to have saved the snake from certain death. The snake was grateful and slithered up to whisper in the boy’s ear. Thank you for saving my life. I am the son of the Snake Emperor, and you must come home with me so that my father might thank you in person for your kindness.’ Even though Keloğlan had no more gold coins to buy food, he was happy to have saved his three friends and agreed to go and see the Snake Emperor before returning home to his mother. When they arrived in the forest, the Snake Emperor was very grateful to Keloğlan for saving his son’s life.

‘I will give you anything that you ask of me,’ said the Snake Emperor to the boy.

It was then that the young snake whispered in the boy’s ear once more.

‘Ask my father for his magic seal, which he keeps under his tongue. With this seal, all of your wishes will come true. All you have to do is ask for something and it will be given to you.’ So, the boy asked the Snake Emperor for his magic seal, and the Snake Emperor replied: ‘You ask me for my most precious possession. However, you saved my son’s life and I will grant you what you ask.’ The Snake Emperor relinquished his magic seal. Keloğlan stuffed the seal into his pocket and returned home with his faithful cat and dog by his side. When Keloğlan’s mother learned that her son had given away all of their gold coins she was angry. However, the boy promised that he would make up for this loss by marrying the Emperor’s daughter and making a new life for his mother.

‘And how will you do that, my son? This cat and this dog will not help you do such a thing.’

It was then that Keloğlan told his mother all about the magic seal that would grant his every wish.

The very next day, Keloğlan set off with his faithful cat and dog to the palace to ask for the hand of the Emperor’s daughter. ‘I cannot allow my daughter to marry such a poor boy,’ said the Emperor, when Keloğlan asked to marry the beautiful princess. ‘If you wish to marry my daughter, you must first build a palace next to mine so that I know she will be well looked after. But I know that you will not build such a palace with the help of a cat and a dog.’ That night, Keloğlan held the seal under his tongue and wished that he had a palace of his own. Suddenly there was a blinding light in the night sky. When the light faded, there, at the edge of the forest, stood a magnificent palace gleaming beneath the light of the moon! It was the most magnificent palace the boy had ever seen. And it was his! 

When the Emperor saw that the young boy had built a beautiful palace, he agreed to the marriage at once. So it was that Keloğlan and the princess married that very same day.

The mother moved in with her son and daughter and lived like a queen in her new home. The cat and the dog were also happy in their new life. The months passed and Keloğlan wished for nothing else as he was so happy with his new wife, whom he loved very much. He placed the magic seal in a room all of its own and never told the princess of its magical powers. Then one day, when Keloğlan was out at the marketplace, a crafty old bead seller knocked on the door of the palace and enticed the beautiful princess to buy some of his beads.

‘They are wonderful beads, my princess, and you would do well to buy them from me.’

‘But I have no coins with which to buy them,’ the princess replied.

The crafty old bead seller said that he would be willing to trade his wares for something within the palace: ‘I hear that you have a dusty old seal which you keep in a room in the palace. Surely that is of no use to you. I will take the seal in exchange for all of my beads.’

Not knowing any better, the princess handed over the magic seal to the crafty old bead seller. He quickly disappeared, heading across the lake towards his home in the dark forest somewhere on the other side.
As soon as the seal had gone, the palace disappeared into thin air. The princess and the mother were left standing in the cold. When the Emperor saw that the palace had disappeared, he reclaimed his daughter and promised that she would not be with her new husband if he could not look after her.

When Keloğlan returned home that day, he was upset to find his mother alone, his palace vanished and his beautiful wife returned to her father. He did not know how to find the magic seal and was sure that his new life was over forever. The cat stepped up to the boy and said to him: ‘I can find the seal but I cannot swim across the lake.’ Then the dog stepped forward and said to the cat: ‘I can swim across the lake with you on my back. Together, we will find the magic seal.’ So the faithful cat and dog set off on their journey to recapture the magic seal from the crafty bead seller. When they reached the river, the cat climbed up onto the dog’s back. The dog swam across to the opposite bank. Once they were across, the cat began sniffing at the air and followed the scent of the bead seller through the forest, with the dog close behind. 

It did not take long to find the cottage where the bead seller lived, and they could see through the window that the old man was fast asleep in his chair before the fire.

‘I will catch us a mouse,’ said the cat, ‘while you find us some peppercorns and grind them up with your strong paws.’ The cat caught a little mouse and told it to sneak into the cottage and take the seal from under the tongue of the crafty bead seller. The dog sprinkled the ground peppercorns onto the mouse’s tail. The little mouse scurried into the cottage and climbed up the bead seller’s leg as he slept soundly by the fire. When the mouse wiggled its tail, the peppercorn dust went straight up the old man’s nose and made him sneeze. It was then that the magic seal flew out into the air and the mouse caught it in his tiny paws! The little mouse ran from the cottage and returned the magic seal to the cat and the dog who quickly made their way back through the forest towards the river. Once again, the cat climbed up onto the dog’s back and the brave dog swam across the great river. The faithful cat and dog returned the seal to their master and the palace reappeared in a blinding flash of light. Upon seeing the palace returned, the Emperor agreed that his daughter might once more live with Keloğlan. After all, the Emperor could tell that his daughter was very much in love. Keloğlan decided to throw a huge party to celebrate the return of his beautiful wife. The whole village was invited and so began a feast that lasted for forty days and forty nights. The mother and the Emperor agreed that a cat and a dog could accomplish a great deal if they were faithful to their master. Keloğlan smiled because he had learned that friends always help each other when they can, and there is magic in such friendship. Perhaps even more so than in the magic seal.

 

Mavi Peri ve Cadı Masalı

Bir varmış, bir yokmuş, bulutların arasında bir şehir varmış.
Bu şehrin ismi pembe kentmiş, çünkü evlerinin hepsi Pembe renkmiş.
Pembe kent rüyalar ülkesinin başkentiymiş.
Bu pembe kentte insanlar çok mutlu yaşarlarken, bir gün kötü kalpli bir cadı bulutların arasında sihirli süpürgesi ile gezerken, bu pembe renkli evleri ve sokaklarda mutluluk içinde oynayan çocukları görmüş.
Kıskançlığından ne yapacağını şaşırmış ve öfke içinde şehrin sokaklarına inmiş.
Bu kötü kalpli cadının birçok sihir yapma özelliği varmış.
Sokaklarda gezmesine rağmen insanlar onu göremiyormuş.
Cadı çok güzel bir evin önünden geçerken, evin bahçesindeki salıncakta sallanan Eceyi görmüş.
Bu ev, bu bahçe, bu salıncak benim olmalı demiş ve hemen Ece'nin yanına bir kız kılığına girerek yaklaşmış.
Ece'ye bende seninle oynayabilir miyim? diye sormuş.
Ece bu sarı saçlı ve üzerinde sarı elbiseler olan, ilk defa gördüğü güzel kıza bakmış.
-Benim de yalnız oynamaktan zaten canım sıkılıyordu ama ben seni tanımıyorum. Pembe kente yeni mi taşındınız? diye sormuş.
Cadı ona:
-Evet, yeni taşındık ama hiç arkadaşım yok ve onun için çok üzülüyorum demiş.
Cadı Eceyi kandırmak için hemen ağlamaya başlamış, sahte gözyaşları yanaklarını ıslatmış.
Ece karşısında duran sarı elbiseli ve sarı saçlı kıza çok acımış ve hemen ona elini uzatmış.
Benim ismim Ece ya senin ki ne?
Cadı bir an düşünmüş.
Benimki de Cuda demiş.
Ece ona:
-Kendin gibi isminde güzelmiş, bundan sonra sen benim en iyi arkadaşımsın artık üzülme dedikten sonra, sallandığı salıncaktan kalkarak, yeni arkadaşını salıncağa oturtmuş ve yavaş yavaş onu sallamaya başlamış.
Cadı Ece'ye gülmeye başlamış, ama ona güldüğünü hiç belli etmemiş.
Ece yeni arkadaşına annesini ve babasını sevdiğini ve onların da kendisini çok sevdiğini söylemiş.

Cadı Ece'nin bu anlattıklarını kıskanmış ve ona kötülük yapmaya karar vermiş.
Cadı biraz da ben seni sallayayım diyerek salıncaktan kalkmış ve Eceyi salıncağa oturtmuş ve hızlı hızlı salıncağı sallamaya başlamış.
O kadar hızlı sallıyormuş ki Ece yeni arkadaşına salıncağı durdurması için yalvarmaya başlamış.
Ama kötü kalpli cadının niyeti başkaymış.
Ece'nin korku dolu çığlıklarına hiç aldırış etmeden, salıncağı daha hızlı, daha hızlı, sallamaya başlamış.
Ece çığlıklar attıkça, cadı ona kahkahalarla gülüyormuş.
Ece'nin çığlıkları duyulmaz olmuş, çünkü o küçük elleri ile sıkı sıkı tuttuğu salıncaktan kurtulmuş ve kuş gibi uçarak, gökyüzünde mavi bir bulutun üzerine düşmüş.
Ece bulutun üzerinde korkusundan ne yapacağını şaşırmış.
Aşağıya düşmemek için hiç kımıldamadan bir heykel gibi durmaya başlamış, saatler bu şekilde geçmiş ve hava kararmış.
Yıldızlar gökyüzünde bir bir parlamaya başlamışlar.
Ece devamlı bağırarak, yardım istemiş ama bağırmaktan sesi kısılmış ve ağlayarak çaresizce beklemeye başlamış.
Birden kendisine doğru kırmızı bir ışığın yaklaştığını görmüş.
Işık yaklaşmış, yaklaşmış ve saçına konmuş.
Işık ona:
- Ece ağlama ben ateşböceğiyim, sana yardıma geldim demiş.
Ece şaşkınlık içerisinde:
- Ama nasıl olur bir ateşböceği nasıl konuşur? diye hayretle sormuş.
Ateşböceği:
-Ben sihirler ülkesinden geliyorum, orada yaşayanların doğaüstü özellikleri var.
Ama bunu sizlerin anlaması zor.
Ben seni evine götürmeye geldim demiş.
Ece, ateşböceğine:
-Sen yoksa şu masallarda anlatılan, iyi kalpli peri misin? diye sormuş.
Ateş böceği ona gülmüş ve evet o benim diye cevap vermiş.
Ece sana inanmıyorum diye bağırmış.
Ateşböceği önce kırmızı sonra yeşil ışıklar çıkarmış ve birden ortaya mavi elbiseler içinde başında taç olan çok güzel genç bir kız ortaya çıkmış.
Ece korkuyla gözlerini kapatmış.
Genç kız sanki şarkı söyler gibi bir sesle benden korkmana sebep yok, çünkü ben iyilik perisiyim, hadi artık gözlerini aç demiş.
Ece gözlerini yavaşça açmış ve iyilik perisine başından geçenleri anlatmış.
İyilik perisi:
-Seni buraya atan o kötü kalpli cadıyı tanıyorum ve neler yaptığını da gördüm
Ece :
-O cadı değildi, güzel bir çocuktu ama beni neden o kadar hızlı salladığını anlayamadım.
İyilik perisi:
-O çok kötü kalpli bir peri idi, onun için kraliçemiz onu ülkemizden kovdu ve onu cadıya çevirdi.
Hadi elimden tut, o cadıyı senin evinden kovmaya gidelim.
Ece iyilik perisinin elinden tutmuş ve havada süzüle süzüle bir güvercin gibi doğan güneşe doğru uçmuşlar.
İyilik perisi yolda Ece'ye planını açıklamış ve o şekilde hareket etmesini söylemiş.
Ece evinin kapısını çalmış, biraz sonra annesi kapıyı açınca şaşırmış.

Bu nasıl olur Ece içerde bizimle kahvaltı yapıyor, yoksa ben hayal mi görüyorum diye koşarak evin içine girmiş.
Masada kahvaltısını yapan kızına şaşkın şaşkın bakmış ve tekrar kapıya doğru koşmuş.
Gözlerine inanamamış ve bağırarak Ece'nin babasını yanına çağırmış.
Ece'nin babası kapının önüne gelince o da şaşkınlıktan ne diyeceğini şaşırmış.
Ece hemen evin içine girmiş ve cadının karşısına oturarak, anne benim karnım aç bana süt verir misin ? demiş.
Annesi bir ona, bir karşısında ki sahte Ece'ye bakmış, sonunda dayanamayarak, hanginiz benim kızım diye çığlıklar atmaya başlamış.
Sahte Ece hemen koşup annesinin boynuna sarılmış.
Anne, baba sizin biricik sevgili kızınız benim, bu bana benzeyen çocukta nereden çıktı.
Onu hemen evimizden kovun diye yalandan ağlamaya başlamış.
Ece iyilik perisinin kendisine söylediği planı uygulamaya başlamış.
Annesine ve babasına sizin kızınız benim.

Şu gördüğünüz çocuk benim kılığıma girmiş bir yalancı diye bağırmış.
Şimdi kimin gerçek Ece olduğunu size ispat edeceğim demiş ve önünde ki
büyük bardağa süt doldurup yarısına kadar içmiş.
Geri kalan sütü sahte Ece'ye uzatıp:
- Hadi sende iç demiş.
Kötü kalpli cadı hemen annesinin arkasına saklanmış.
Ece ona hadi içsene diye ısrar etmiş ama sahte Ece sütü görünce tiksinmiş ve kusmaya başlamış.
İyilik perisi yolda gelirken Ece'ye cadının sütü hiç sevmediğini ve tiksindiğini anlatmış.
Ece anne ve babasına dönerek:
-İşte bakın sütü görünce kusmaya başladı, sizin kızınız benim çünkü ben sütü severim demiş.
Bu kız yalan söylüyor, sizin biricik kızınız benim, diye cadı tekrar ağlamaya başlamış.
Ece iyilik perisinin kendisine öğrettiği sihirli kelimeyi söyleyerek cadıya :
-Hadi sende söyle demiş.
Kötü kalpli cadı şaşırmış, sana bu sihirli kelimeyi kim söyledi, sen bu kelimeyi nereden biliyorsun diye Ece'nin yanına koşmuş ve onu kollarından tutarak, yere doğru itmiş.
Ece yerde yatarken, ona hadi korkma söylesene diye tekrar sihirli kelimeyi söylemiş.
Annesi ve babası neler olduğunu anlamadan şaşırmış bir vaziyette öylece birbirlerine bakıyorlarmış.
Ece cadıya bu sihirli kelimeyi söylemezsin çünkü söylersen gerçek yüzün ortaya çıkacak, ondan korkuyorsun değil mi? diye sormuş.
Birden evin içinde mavi bir ışık parlamış ve ortaya iyilik perisi çıkmış.
Hemen elindeki sihirli sopası ile kötü kalpli cadıya vurmuş.
Cadı önce acı içinde çığlıklar atmaya başlamış ve gittikçe küçülerek yok olmuş.
Ece annesine ve babasına sarılmış.
Onlara başından geçenleri anlatmış.
Ecenin annesi ve babası iyilik perisine kızlarını kurtardığı için çok teşekkür etmişler.
İyilik perisi yine ateşböceği olmuş ve kırmızı ışıklar çıkarak, sihirler ülkesine uçup gitmiş.
