KELOĞLAN VE SİCAP MASALI İNGİLİZCE

 Once upon a time, in a small village in Turkey, there lived a mother and her loyal son. Everyone knew the boy as Keloğlan, which means ‘bald boy’ because even though he was still quite young, he had no hair on his head at all. Keloğlan and his mother were very poor indeed. Each day Keloğlan would take up his basket and venture out into the woods in search of food.

‘Good luck, my son,’ the old woman would call out as Keloğlan waved goodbye and set out on his daily journey. One day, Keloğlan was searching the forest floor for the juicy mushrooms that could often be found growing in the shadows of the tall trees. As he searched, he was sure that he could hear a young girl crying. When he looked up, Keloğlan noticed a little squirrel sitting on a tree branch above his head. The squirrel was crying inconsolably. Keloğlan reached out to comfort the little creature. He took the squirrel in his arms, stroked it, sang to it and assured it that everything was going to be okay. When, at last, the squirrel stopped crying, the two friends got to talking. Keloğlan explained that he lived with his mother and that they were penniless.

‘I need to come into this forest each day in search of food because we have no money,’ he told the squirrel. It was then that the little squirrel said, ‘You have been very kind to me today, and so I am going to help you in return.’

Then the little squirrel jumped out of Keloğlan’s hands and said, ‘Follow me! Follow me!’

The young boy followed the squirrel through the forest for many hours until they reached the edge of a cliff overlooking a lush green valley below. ‘You must climb down this cliff,’ said the squirrel. ‘When you reach the bottom you will find the Grouse Queen. She will ask you three questions. You must answer them all correctly to receive the prize.’ The squirrel climbed up onto Keloğlan’s shoulder and whispered the answers to the three questions in his ear. Once she had done so, she jumped down and scampered back into the forest without another word. Keloğlan made himself a rope out of twine. He lowered himself down the cliff edge and made his way to where the squirrel had told him the Grouse Queen lived. When she saw him, the Grouse Queen stopped Keloğlan in his tracks and demanded that he answer three questions.

‘If you do not answer correctly,’ she said, in her stern voice, ‘then you will lose your head.’

Keloğlan was very nervous, but he nodded all the same and awaited the first question. The Grouse Queen indicated toward a cherry tree nearby.

‘How many cherries are growing on this cherry tree?’ she asked.

‘There are as many cherries on that tree as there are feathers on your back,’ replied Keloğlan, without hesitation. The Grouse Queen nodded approvingly and then asked, ‘Where is the middle of the earth?’ ‘You are standing on the middle of the earth,’ said Keloğlan with just a hint of doubt in his voice. Once again, the Grouse Queen nodded approvingly. Then she cleared her throat and prepared for her third and final question. She presented Keloğlan with two identical-looking walnuts and asked, ‘Which is the heavier of these two walnuts?’ Keloğlan looked at both nuts and then tossed them into a nearby stream. One of the nuts stayed afloat, but the other disappeared beneath the surface.

‘The one which has sunk beneath the water is the heavier of the two, Your Majesty.’

The Grouse Queen could not deny that all three answers were correct and so she reluctantly handed Keloğlan the large pot of gold that was his rightful prize. The young boy climbed back up the cliff face with his pot of gold strapped to his back. He ran into the forest to thank the little squirrel for her kindness. But when Keloğlan eventually found the squirrel, she was crying again. Her head rested on her tiny front paws as the tears fell to the ground all around her.

‘Why are you so sad?’ asked Keloğlan.

‘I used to be a beautiful princess until the Grouse Queen cast a spell on me and turned me into a squirrel. Now the only thing that will set me free is a single drop of emerald water from the lake in the dragon’s cave.’

Keloğlan was so very grateful to the little squirrel for saving him and his mother from a life of poverty that he promised to fetch the drop of emerald water. He marched into town and used some of his gold to buy the sharpest sword the blacksmith had ready. Then he climbed the Mountain of Kaf to the dragon’s cave.

When he reached the cave, Keloğlan raised his sword and did battle with the two giant snakes that guarded the entrance to the cave. The fight was fierce and bloody. Keloğlan eventually cut the heads from the evil snakes and threw them over the edge of the mountain. Deep inside the cave, the evil dragon stirred. He stretched his wings and took flight to see what was happening with his snake guards. It was then that Keloğlan crept unnoticed into the dragon’s lair and filled his glass bottle with the precious emerald water.

When he was sure it was safe, he ran from the lair, climbed back down the mountain and disappeared into the forest to find the squirrel.

‘I have returned,’ he told his friend as he raised the bottle into the air, ‘and I have the emerald water for you.’ Keloğlan poured some of the water into his open palm and watched it run between his fingers and fall onto the forest floor. The last drop he saved for the squirrel, who jumped down from the tree to drink from Keloğlan’s palm. As soon as she had taken the drop of emerald water, there was a blinding flash of white light that illuminated the gloomy forest for miles. When the light eventually faded, a beautiful princess stood before Keloğlan. Tears of gratitude shone in her eyes.

Keloğlan escorted the princess to the royal palace. When the sultan saw his beautiful daughter, he was overjoyed. ‘You are a brave man and you shall never again want for anything,’ he assured Keloğlan as he embraced the youth. That was when Keloğlan remembered his poor mother waiting back at home for her mushrooms. He thanked the princess and the sultan. Then he took his pot of gold and returned home to his mother, shopping for gifts and food at the local market on his way. The old woman could not believe the story that Keloğlan told her over dinner that night, but one thing was for sure – her brave son would never again have to enter the forest in search of food. The old woman smiled to herself as she dipped her silver spoon into a big bowl of mushroom soup.

MASAL BİLGE KRAL MASALI

 Bir varmış, bir yokmuş.

Evvel zaman içinde, kalbur saman içinde, okyanusun karşı kıyısında, mutlu insanların yaşadığı güneşin üzerinde batmadığı bir ülke varmış.
Bu güzel ülkeyi adil, bilge bir kral yönetiyormuş ve bilge kralın üç tane oğlu varmış.
Günlerden bir gün kral yaşlandığını ve tahtını oğullarından birisine bırakmayı düşünmüş.
Bu fikrini oğullarına söylemek için onlarını huzuruna çağırmış:
Çocuklarına ben iyice yaşlandım, belki yakında ölürüm, onun için içinizden birisinin kral olmasını istiyorum, demiş.
Çocukları tek tek söz alarak, tahtın kendi hakları olduğunu söylemişler.
Yaşlı kral oğullarına bu işi adil bir şekilde çözeceğini söyleyerek, onlardan zaman istemiş.
Ben ölürsem bunlar kral olmak için kendi aralarında savaşırlar.
Bu huzurlu ülkeye felaket getirirler, diye çok endişelenmiş ve uykuları kaçmış, günlerce kara kara düşünmüş.
Sonunda aklına parlak bir fikir gelmiş ve bu fikrini uygulamak için çocuklarını tekrar yanına çağırmış.
Bilge kral huzurunda kendisinin vereceği kararı merakla bekleyen çocuklarına:
-Size adil bir yarışma öneriyorum, eğer bu yarışmayı kim kazanırsa kral o olacak demiş ve yarışmanın kurallarını anlatmaya başlamış.
Denizin ortasında üç tane ada var.
Ama adalarda içecek su yok.
Bu adaların üzerinde sadece ağaçlar ve maymunlar yaşıyor.
Sizleri gemi ile ayrı ayrı adaları bıraktıracağım, eğer bu adalarda kim uzun süre yaşarsa ve en son saraya dönerse şu gördüğünüz taht onun hakkı olacak demiş.
Çocukları bu teklifi, kral olabilmek için, kabul etmek zorunda kalmışlar.
Babaları onlara her on beş günde bir su göndereceğini söylemiş ve ertesi günü bir gemi sabah erkenden limandan açık denize doğru yelken açmış.
Bilge kral oğullarını uğurlarken, buraya en son gelen kral olacak diye, onlara tekrar hatırlatmış.
Gemi ilk adanın yanına gelince kralın en büyük oğlunu adaya indirmiş.
Kralın en büyük oğlu aşırı şişman ve çok tembelmiş.
Saraydaki günleri devamlı yemek yemekle ve uyumakla geçiyormuş.
Gemi ikinci adaya gelince karalın ortanca oğlu geminin kıyaya yaklaşmasını beklemeden, elindeki su dolu fıçıyla denize atlamış ve yüzerek kıyıya çıkmış.
Kralın ortanca oğlu güçlü ve kuvvetli çok savaşçı birisiymiş.
Sarayda ki günleri devamlı ormanda yabani hayvan avında geçiyormuş.
Gemi üçüncü adaya yaklaşmış ve kralın en küçük oğlunu su dolu fıçısıyla kıyıya bırakarak, saraya doğru yelken açmış.
Kralın küçük oğlu zayıf ve güçsüz birisiymiş ve saraydaki günlerini devamlı kitap okuyarak ve sarayın bilgeleriyle konuşarak geçirirmiş.
Aradan günler geçmiş, güneş batmış, ay doğmuş ve on beşinci gün gelip çatmış.
Yine aynı gemi ambarlarına su yükleyerek, adalara doğru yelken açmış.
İlk adaya gelince kıyıda tembel oğlanın gemiye doğru bağırarak, el salladığını görmüşler.
Kaptan su dolu fıçıyı ona götürmüş ama tembel suyu istememiş ve kaptana yarışmadan çekildiğini kendisini saraya götürmesini söylemiş.
Kaptan ona kardeşlerinin suyunu bırakıp, kendisini gemiye geri dönüşte alabileceğini söyleyerek, öbür adalara doğru hareket etmiş.
İkinci adaya yaklaştıklarında kralın ortanca oğlu onları görmüş ve koşarak kayalıklardan aşağıya inerek su fıçısını alarak, tekrar hızlı adımlarla adanın zirvesine doğru tırmanarak, gözden kaybolmuş.
Gemi üçüncü adaya demir atmış ve kaptan kralın küçük oğlunu beklemeye başlamış, saatler geçmesine rağmen küçük oğlan ortada yokmuş.
Kaptan adamlarına emir vermiş ve adamlar kralın en küçük oğlunu aramak için adanın zirvesine doğru çıkmaya başlamışlar.
Güneş batmak üzereyken, adamlar tekrar sahile dönmüşler ve kaptana küçük çocuğun hayatta olduğunu, su dolu fıçıyı buraya bırakmamızı istediğini söylemişler.
Güçlü rüzgârlar yelkenleri doldurmuş ve gemi kuş gibi uçarak, kralın en büyük oğlu Tembeli adasından alarak, saraya varmış.
Bilge kral tembel oğlunu karşısında zayıflamış bir halde görünce hiç şaşırmamış ve
Ona hemen tahta hakkım yoktur diye bir kâğıt imzalatmış.
Oğluna neden bu kadar çabuk yarışmadan çekildiğini sormuş.
Oğlu ada da yiyecek hiçbir şey bulamadığını ve yalnız on beş gündür su içtiğini anlatmış.
Kral ona maymunları yakalayıp yiyebilirdin, demiş.
Tembel oğlan babasına maymunların çok yüksek ağaçların tepesinde yaşadıklarını ve o ağaçlara kimsenin tırmanıp onları yakalayamayacağını anlatmış, sonra babasından izin istemiş ve kaybettiği kiloları tekrar almak için, doğru mutfağın yolunu tutmuş.
Aradan günler, haftalar, aylar geçmiş.
Gemi adalara su götürüp, geri dönünce, kaptan krala iki çocuğunun da yaşadığı ama küçük çocuğunun su dolu fıçıları hiç almadığını anlatmış.
Bilge kral bu habere çok şaşırmış ve bir insanın hiç su içmeden bu kadar uzun zaman nasıl yaşadığına aklı ermemiş.
Kaptana gayet sert bir sesle:
-Sen o adalarda bana su yok demiştin, bu nasıl olur?
Küçük çocuğumun yaşadığı ada da eğer su varsa bunun cezasını zindanda çekersin.
Bu yarışma adil olmaz ve ben buna asla müsaade etmem.
Kral kaptanı küçük çocuğunun yaşadığı ada da su olup olmadığını kontrol etmesi için geri göndermiş.
Kaptan adamları ile adaya çıkmış, karış karış adanın her tarafını aramışlar ve geri dönmek için yelken açmışlar.
Kral merakla kaptanın geri dönmesini sarayın penceresinden denize bakarak bekliyormuş.
Ufukta yelkenliyi görünce hemen sahile inmiş ve kaptan sahile ayağını basar basmaz,
Kralına doğru hızlıca koşarak, onun önünde saygı ile eğilmiş ve kralım küçük oğlunuzun adada su içebileceği ne kaynak, ne dere, ne pınar gibi hiçbir şey yok.
Bundan emin olabilirsiniz,
Kral bu cevaba şaşırmış ve bu nasıl olur diye kendi kendine söylenmiş.
Rüzgârlar kimi zaman sert esmiş, bulutları kovalamış, kimi zaman serin serin esmiş, çiçeklerin büyülü kokularını etrafa yaymış.
Dalgalar bazen delirmiş, hırsını kayalıkları döverek almış, bazen nazlı nazlı inci gibi kumların üzerinde dans ederek kırılmış.
Gündüz geceyi gece gündüzü kovmuş, zaman su olup akmış.
Günlerden bir gün gemi ortanca oğlu ile geri dönmüş.
Bilge kral cesur ve savaşçı oğlunu karşısında perişan halde görünce çok şaşırmış ve hemen sarayın hekimlerini çağırtmış.
Hekimler kralın oğlunun bir kolunun kırık olduğunu hemen anlamışlar ve tedaviye başlamışlar.
Bilge kral büyük oğluna yaptığı gibi ortanca oğluna da tahta hakkı olmadığına dair bir kâğıt imzalatmış ve oğluna bu hale nasıl geldiğini merak içinde sormuş.
Oğlu başından geçenleri anlatmaya başlamış:
Adaya ilk çıktığım gün hemen kendime sert bir ağaçtan mızrak yaptım.
Kuru ağaçları birbirine sürterek ateş yaktım ve maymunları avlayarak pişirip yemeğe başladım.
Günler geçtikçe maymunların sayısı azaldı ve sonunda avlayacağım, maymun kalmadı.
Maymunlar Hindistan cevizi ağaçlarının tepesinde yaşıyorlardı ve bu ağacın meyvesi ile besleniyorlardı.
Bende maymun kalmayınca, Hindistan cevizi ile beslenmek için bu çok yüksek ağaçların tepesine çıkmam gerekti.
Çok defa denenememe rağmen bir türlü ağaçların tepesine çıkamadım.
Bundan beş gün önce son denememde ağaçtan yere düşerek kolumu kırdım ve kral olma hakkımı böylece kaybetmiş oldum.
Kral oğluna balık tutmayı neden denemediğini sormuş.
Oğlu ona adanın kenarlarının yüksek uçumlarla çevrili olduğunu ve balık tutacak imkanı olmadığını anlatmış.
Kral kaptana dönerek küçük oğlunu adadan getirmesini emretmiş.
Küçük oğlan saraya gelmiş ve babasını saygı ile selamlamış.
Bilge kral tahtından ayağa kalkmış ve onun elinden tutarak, kendi tahtına oturtmuş ve başından tacını çıkarak ona takmış.
Kral yardımcılarını yanına çağırmış, onlara yeni kralın tahta oturmasını kutlamak için ülkesinde şenliklerin başlatılmasını emretmiş.
Yeni krala merak içinde hayatta nasıl kaldığını sormuş.
Yeni, genç kral başından geçenleri eski krala ve bütün saraya anlatmaya başlamış.
Adaya ilk çıktığım gün, bana verilen su fıçısının çok ağır olduğunu fark ederek onu orada bırakarak, yalçın kayalıkların uçurumlarla dolu kenarlarından, gayet dikkatli tırmanarak, adanın ağaçlarla kaplı yerine ulaştım.
Hemen yaşayacağım yeri incelemeye başladım.
Çok yüksek Hindistan cevizi ağaçlarını ve üzerinde yaşayan maymunları gördüm.
Benim o yüksek ağaçlara tırmanıp Hindistan cevizi koparmam ve maymunları da avlamam imkânsızdı.
Babası merak içinde oğluna:
-Hiç su içmeden hayatta kalmana hala aklım almıyor hadi hadi anlat.
Genç kral tekrar anlatmaya başlamış:
Maymunları ve etrafımı incelerken, maymunun birisi ağacın tepesinden kopardığı Hindistan cevizi ile yere inerek onu kırıp içini yemek için uğraştığını gördüm.
Maymun kabuğu çok sert olan bu Hindistan cevizini kıramadı ve ben ona doğru yaklaşınca cevizi orada bırakarak ağaca tırmandı.
Bende Hindistan cevizini taş ile kırarak ağacın altına bıraktım.
Maymun kırılmış cevizi görünce hızla ağaçtan indi ve kırılmış cevizi alarak, tekrar ağaca tırmanıp onu güvenli bir yere gelince yedi.
Aradan birkaç saat geçince aynı maymun yine elinde bir Hindistan cevizi ile ağaçtan yere indi ve onu bırakarak ağacın üst tarafına çıkıp, bana bakmaya başladı.
Ben yine Hindistan cevizini taşla parçalayarak, kendimin yiyeceği kadar bir parça alarak, parçalanmış cevizin maymunun almasını bekledim.
Onu gören, öbür maymunlarda zamanla Hindistan cevizlerini bana kırmam için getirmeye başladılar.
Sizin anlayacağınız, ben onları onlar beni beslediler ve her kırdığım Hindistan cevizinin içindeki suyu da onlarla paylaştım ve böylece hayatta kalmayı başardım.
Yaşlı ve eski kral bu akıllı oğlu ile gurur duymuş ve taht aklın sahibi oldu diye sevinmiş ve
gökten üç elma düşmüş.
Birisi yaşlı ve bilge krala, ikincisi genç krala ve üçüncü elma bu masalı okuyana.

One day, a queer fellow with piercing eyes, came to town. He was called the Pied Piper. He went to the Mayor and asked him, “What will you pay me if I free your town of every single rat?” The mayor offered fifty pounds to the Pied Piper.
Happy with the offer, the Pied Piper started playing his pipe. Hearing the shrill, keen note, every rat came out from its hole and started following him.
