How to hold carp
Carp – Cautious but HungryCatching carp is an exciting, yet somewhat challenging task. Carp are a freshwater fish, and they love to eat and to be fed. But they are also a species of fish that tends to seek out shady, less disturbed locations.
Here are some things to consider if you want to catch carp:
* Do your homework – Research where carp are most abundant near you, then fish in that location.
* Bring more than one type of bait – Carp can be caught with worms, nightcrawlers, pieces of hot dogs, and doughy bread balls, among a myriad of other things. If you opt to use bread to create doughy bread balls, you’ll need a loaf of fresh bread and some water. To prepare a doughy bread ball, tear out the center of a piece of bread. Wet your fingertips sparingly, and work the light moisture into the bread until it becomes slightly doughy, but firm enough to stay on your hook.
* Never take your eyes or hands completely off of your rod and reel. Carp can grow to unbelievable sizes, and 20-pounders might be eyeing your bait while you’re opening a soda or munching on lunch. If a large fish hits your hook hard enough, it can and will steal your entire rig quicker than you can yell “rod and reel overboard.”
* Drop line to the bottom. Use split shots or sinkers to be sure your hook and bait are on or near the bottom. Picture goldfish in a tank as they swim along the bottom and ruminate in search of food. The same principal applies when fishing for carp of a much larger nature.
* Use extreme patience. Leave your bait in the water until you get a strike so that it becomes part of the carp’s scenery.
* Fish in the morning or evening. Even hungry carp tend to hide out and abstain from dining when the sun is high in the sky, especially in warmer weather.
